UCP Texas Assistive Technology Project
Program Overview
The UCP Texas Bellows Fund uses the federal definition of assistive technology:

"Any piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities."

Funds are available to assist individuals with limited resources to cover reasonable expenses incurred for assistive technology (AT) purchases or modifications. These funds are considered to be a funding means of last resort. Bellows funds applicants must demonstrate that there are no other funding resources available.

Application
Applications may be obtained from the UCP Texas office by calling Kelly Garcia at 1-800-798-1492 or locally in the Austin area 472-8696. When completed, all applications should be returned to the UCP Texas office with appropriate attachments.

Examples¹ of Eligible Requests for Assistive Technology are:

  • Adaptive computer software and devices
  • Orthopedic equipment and footware
  • Adaptive switches
  • Partial financial assistance for lifts*
  • Partial financial assistance for computers and computer equipment
  • Partial financial assistance for communication devices
  • Hearing Aids
  • * Partial (supplemental) funding for lifts may be provided if the individual or family has secured funding from other resources to cover the majority of the purchase. Documentation must be provided with the Bellows Funds application.

Examples¹ of Ineligible Assistive Technology are:

  • Automobiles
  • Evaluations or other Assistive Technology "services"
  • Furniture and appliances (that is not adapted)
